Houston, US, June 22 (EFE).-

Gerardo Arteaga’s 68-minute strike gave Mexico a 1-0 victory against Jamaica in their opening match in Copa America at the NRG Stadium in Houston on Saturday.

Despite the win, Mexican left the field feeling uncomfortable due to the injury of skipper Edson Alvarez who limped off the field in tears in the first half with his recovery time uncertain.

Alvarez, who plays for English West Ham United, was chasing Shamar Nicholson on a counterattack when he collapsed and began to writhe in pain while touching the back of his left thigh.

Replacing him in the field, Luis Romo gave Jaime Lozano’s team the peace of mind to start the tournament on the right foot setting up the goal for Gerardo Arteaga.

Mexico will now travel to Inglewood for their next match against Venezuela on June 26.
